At the annual Non-Profit Human Resources Conference in Washington, DC, on October 4, 2009, Bridgespan Group Partner Wayne Luke shared a story about a high-profile search to find the right job candidates for an historic new venture. The story was that of the Mercury Seven and how they had been recruited and selected by NASA in 1958. According to Luke, the Mercury Seven were the ultimate sector switchers—individuals whose experience came from outside the sector they were entering—and their story illustrates how nonprofits can identify, evaluate, and integrate sector switchers into their organizations.

| Ross Maund: Doing Your Homework to Smooth the Transition |
Ross Maund has some advice for private sector professionals who are considering moving to the nonprofit sector: Do your homework about the nonprofit sector before you take on a nonprofit leadership role. It is advice Maund said he wishes he had received before he became president and chief executive officer (CEO) of Junior Achievement (JA) of Canada and the Canadian Business Hall of Fame.

Junior Achievement of New York (JANY) is a nonprofit organization that connects volunteers with students in grades K-12. Through in-class activities, after-school programs, and workplace experiences, students acquire the confidence they need to succeed in their future careers and in life. The organization seeks a President, who will oversee all operations of the organization. Specific responsibilities of the President include: identifying strategic priorities and working with the board of directors to develop a board-supported plan of strategic action; developing annual budgets and aligning resources to JANY’s strategic goals; developing and implementing effective fund-raising campaigns; acting as the key spokesperson for the organization; and providing staff leadership. Successful candidates will have held a prior leadership position (CEO, COO, or other senior level executive) in a similar sized or larger organization, with experience running a sizeable, successful nonprofit being preferred. Professional qualifications desired include: the ability to lead; fund-raising and coalition-building skills; and the ability to communicate effectively and persuasively in a public arena. Desired personal attributes include: a passion for JANY’s mission; the ability to adapt to a changing environment and work with diverse groups; and the ability to reach common ground and build alliances without compromising the organization's interests.

These two groups are part of our National Nonprofit COO Group in addition to our Boston Nonprofit COO Group.
