The day-to-day responsibilities for nonprofit chief executive officers (CEOs) can vary greatly depending on the nonprofit organization’s size, geographic reach, and mission, among other factors. As a result, it can be difficult for senior leaders who aspire to become nonprofit CEOs to fully understand the scope of the role and the challenges they might face when they first move into the top job.
To help would-be CEOs gain insight in those areas, Bridgespan Partner Kathleen Yazbak talked with James O’S Morton, president and CEO of the YMCA of Greater Springfield. The organization is one of the largest providers of childcare, before- and after-school programming, housing, and wellness programs in Western Massachusetts. While Morton’s story is uniquely his own, his experiences can help senior leaders think about the questions they should ask to get a better understanding of the nonprofit CEO role in general and any specific CEO positions at nonprofit organizations in which they are interested.

Founded in 2003, The Children's Investment Fund Foundation (CIFF) aims to demonstrably improve the lives of children living in poverty in developing countries by achieving large-scale, sustainable impact. With an asset base of over $2.5 billion, CIFF employs more than 30 professionals in England, Africa, and India.
The Foundation currently seeks an Executive Director, Programmes (EDP). Reporting to the CEO, the EDP will be part of CIFF’s six-member executive team. The EDP will have the experience, judgment, and flexibility to effectively lead and manage a team of four to six managers and their support teams based in Africa, India, and the UK. S/he will shape the department and drive the performance of the investment portfolio through rigorous, data-centric management, complemented by a willingness to challenge the status quo. S/he will drive and maintain relationships with foundations, nongovernmental organizations, and political entities to continually increase the scope and scale of impact.
This role requires an exceptional leader who is both strategic and analytical with top-notch managerial capabilities. S/he must have the gravitas and credibility to work with CIFF’s board and high-level officials throughout Europe, Asia, and Africa coupled with a passion for improving the lives of disadvantaged children.

Youth Speak! Collective (YSC), a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization, is a youth-driven initiative empowering low-income communities in the Northeast San Fernando Valley with the skills necessary to pursue higher education and create strong communities. The organization is seeking a Board Member to help govern the organization. Board Member responsibilities include communicating Youth Speak!’s mission and programs to the community, engaging in ongoing planning activities, approving the organization’s budget each year, and attending and participating in quarterly board meetings. Desirable qualifications for this position include six-plus years of experience in a leadership position at a for-profit or nonprofit organization, excellent written and communications skills, as well as the ability to work cooperatively with individuals from diverse backgrounds and to work within a team environment.

Scholarships to Attend HBS Nonprofit Executive Education Program
The Harvard Business School (HBS) Alumni Association of Northern California will sponsor San Francisco Bay Area nonprofit CEOs/executive directors to attend the one-week executive education program "Strategic Perspectives in Nonprofit Management" offered at HBS from July 18-24, 2010.
This intensive six-day residential program provides nonprofit leaders the opportunity to step back from the day-to-day pressures of the workplace to examine their missions and rethink approaches to carrying them out. Participants are challenged by HBS faculty and colleagues to examine and rethink their organizations, and strengthen their capacity to improve the effectiveness of their organizations. Sponsorship will cover the total program fee of $4,900, which includes tuition, on-campus accommodations, and meals. Applications are available now and are due by March 8, 2010. To qualify for the scholarship awards, the applicant must hold the position of CEO, executive director, or president of their organization which must have 501(c)(3) status. The organization should have a budget of at least $1 million. In addition to completing an application, we also require that the chair of the board of directors of the applicant's organization submit a brief statement relating to his/her endorsement of the applicant.
